Anderson Moores update...

8/2/2024

The following post update has been received from Anderson Moores:

We can confirm, based on kidney analysis, another two cases for December 2023, and 10 cases for January 2024.

Locations of confirmed cases include Surrey, Berkshire, Staffordshire, Buckinghamshire and Herefordshire, Dorset, Wiltshire and a case from London. The UK has now seen 318 confirmed cases, with 10 confirmed in 2024 so far.

We are also thrilled to report we have recently discharged a CRGV survivor, the lovely Matilda. Sadly, two of her family members were lost to CRGV. Whilst overjoyed to get her home, our wonderful nursing team will miss her after their amazing and intensive support!

We remain aware of other potential cases in the UK – with the numbers above considered a minimum; however, certain criteria require fulfilment to allow us to confirm a case (and add it to our map) based on a review of a patient’s history and tissue analysis. We continue to support vets with this assessment and encourage concerned colleagues to get in touch.

This disease is still rare, so we’re advising dog owners to remain calm but vigilant and seek advice from their local vet if their dog develops unexplained skin lesions.

Further information and a map of confirmed cases can be found on our dedicated Alabama Rot website

Hi. We had our 3yr old puppy put to sleep 2weeks ago and it has been confirmed as Alabama rot. We live in Darlington.

I’m sorry to hear that Kareb. I’m not part of ARRF but am a researcher in CRGV. If your vets can complete the below then Anderson Moores will be able to add this to the confirmed cases information - https://www.alabama-rot.co.uk/vet-professional/get-advice-or-report-a-case/

Hi Tom,
As a bereaved dog owner whose beloved pooch died unexpectedly in January from suspected AR, write to ask why we are informed that AR can only be confirmed post mortem yet statistically we are advised10% of dogs survive? How has AR been diagnosed in those dogs, as the message seems confusing.
Also, if the specialists dealing with this cruel disease can identify common clinical factors affecting dogs with a high level of suspicion for AR, shouldn’t those numbers be included in stats under that term? I’m concerned that the incidence could be higher than currently thought because of this and given the dogs that survive do appear to have a definitive diagnosis, or do they?
I’m still trying to figure out why my beloved pooch was taken so unexpectedly.
With thanks and best wishes,
Paula

Hi Karen,
I’m so sorry to learn that you had to let your young dog go because of this awful disease. We lost our beloved Elvis, a cocker spaniel, in January and the consequences of that loss have been devastating.
I’m trying to raise a campaign locally to raise awareness of AR, as many people I have met since we lost Elvis, have never heard of it nor would know what to look out for. Indeed, on the 2 occasions we took Elvis to Vet four assessment of his skin lesion, we were told it wasn’t AR.
I’ve started a GoFundMe page to help support AARF and wondered if you would consider same?
With best wishes,
Paula Deery
